The Collection

The Museum of Torture’s collection includes rare pieces dating back to the 16th – 17th – 18th centuries and reconstructions from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, of original, ancient and unobtainable instruments, some well known, others less well known and sophisticated.

The exhibits demonstrate, through reconstructions, panels and clear, multilingual captions, how human imagination had no limits in the search for means to inflict the most abominable tortures, forgetting all forms of human respect.

The exhibition is spread over two floors, with more than sixty pieces, or rather, instruments of torture, that make up the collection, first exhibited at the Aragonese Castle of Ischia and now permanently housed in Naples.

In fact, inside the museum, as mentioned, there are extremely rare pieces dating back to the 16th – 17th – 18th centuries or philological reconstructions of the late 19th and 20th centuries of original ancient and unobtainable instruments that are very well known and others that are less well known and sophisticated.

The main objective of a museum is to make more people aware of what happened during the Inquisition period.
