The history of the Museum

The Torture Museum in Naples is the only museum of its kind in southern Italy.

The main purpose of the museum is to illustrate one of the darkest periods in history, promoting constructive reflection on human cruelty and its incidence in oppression.

The museum delves into the history of the medieval, Spanish and Roman Inquisition, offering visitors the opportunity to explore sixty historical instruments with explanatory captions in four different languages.

In addition, the Naples Torture Museum proudly recounts how the Neapolitan people resolutely opposed, through two bloody revolts, the Spanish Inquisition imposed by Viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo.

While the museum explores this fundamental part of history, it also emphasises the importance of freedom and tolerance of thought on the path to solidarity between peoples with different beliefs and cultures.
